Welcome to Eugene!
It's great when people ask about Eugene, because there's no better place to live, work, or visit! A wealth of national ratings praise our city for its, "livability," but what does that mean?
In Eugene it means friendly, outgoing people; an environment with something for everyone, from the rugged outdoors to quiet gardens to bustling city streets; and a city that sincerely appreciates healthy lifestyles, cultural diversity and the arts.
The Eugene area offers a wide variety of housing opportunities to its residents. Housing is plentiful with both new and existing homes available in a variety of styles and price ranges. You'll find plenty to choose from whether it's city or country living that you desire. New housing developments can be found in all areas with prices from $175,000 to $600,000.
- The average rent for a 3-bedroom home is $900-$1,500 per month.
- Currently the average 2-bedroom apartment rents between $575-$850 per month.
Retirement
Eugene has been selected by many sources over the past decade as one of the best places to retire in the country. Quality of life, mild climate, taxes, crime rate and affordability of housing are just a few of the reasons noted. Nicely located between the Pacific Ocean and the Cascade Mountains makes for many outdoor opportunities for hiking, biking, golfing, river rafting, boating and fishing. There are chances to volunteer, visit the symphony, opera, and ballet or take one of the many classes in a program offered by University of Oregon. And rememer :
Eugene was selected as the "Best Place to Retire in the Northwest" in MONEY Magazine's
2001 annual list.
It All Began
In June of 1846 Eugene E. Skinner and his family founded a settlement on the banks of the Willamette River in Oregon's lush Willamette Valley, in those early days some called the settlement Skinner's Mud-Hole. Did they ever lack vision!
In 1851 the Territorial Legislature established Lane County, with Skinner's settlement recognized as its center. And 11 years later, in 1862, the settlement traded Skinner's last name for his first, becoming officially incorporated as Eugene, Oregon.
